Nightrunners
an oily river is flooding
you can’t follow its trail
it leads to a place
where your son has died to a pond
you remember
how
he played with boats
big blue ones,
cargo ships
he sailed the seven seas,
seven seas full of stars
and between worlds
islands gleamed like sapphires
herons flew above the trees
big bumblebees too
now
he doesn’t breathe
blackened water is pulling him down
down where the wingless vultures,
nightrunners are waiting
but you can’t see them
they breathe his flesh
they are the oil
skyful of river is flooding
and your land is shrinking
nightrunners
are inviting themselves
inside
